UK Takes A Strong Line On Non Compliant Pilot Ladders

Coastguard personnel stand in front of a coastguard helicopter engaged in winching operations

The Channel 5 TV series 'Coastguard Search & Rescue SOS' is currently airing in the Uk giving viewers an insight into the inner workings of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

In this weeks episode a vessel is reported for a non-compliant pilot ladder arrangement. The MCA takes such reports incredibly seriously and in this episode we see two MCA surveyors visit the vessel to investigate the complaint.

However the matter becomes even more serious for the vessel when a catalogue of non pilot ladder related definciencies are identified ranging from fire protection to galley safety. The deficiencies are so serious the vessel is detained and spends 10 days under arrest while they are rectified.

Reports of pilot transfer compliance issues are a red flag to Port State Control inspectors who understand the risks already inherrent in pilot transfer operations. It is essential ship owners, operators and compliance ensure their ships crews are aware of how pilot ladders should be rigged, stored and maintained to ensure their pilots can safely assist their vessels.
